In the sub compact car category, the most efficient car is the Volkswagen Beetle diesel, which is even ahead of the hybrid sub compacts. It doesn’t sound that powerful at 100 HP, but it does have 177 lb-foot of torque. Pontiac and Toyota combined for the most efficient station wagon at 30 mpg in city travel and 36 mpg on the highway. Toyota and General Motors had a joint venture in making the Pontiac Vibe and the Toyota Matrix. Most of the design and engineering came from General Motors, but they both have engines from Toyota. The Matrix and Vibe have efficiency, refinement and smoothness, but they aren’t going to win any street race with their 1.8L 4 cylinder engine, that produces 126 HP.
For large cars the most efficient is the Hyundai Sonata with 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. This came as a major surprise because there was a lot of stiff competition. It does have a powerful 2.4 L 4 cylinder engine, which is also smooth and responsive. It does have a suspension that is not geared as much to handling as it is for comfort because it is soft. The quality of how well it has been built is great, even though it isn’t a BMW. Clearly the Hyundai has improved to the point where it is no longer a manufacturer that is second-rate.
There are lots of fuel-efficient cars being developed today, giving a much greater choice for the drivers. You will no longer have to purchase only what is placed on you, as energy conservation has become a big deal.

Why would a used car dealer or anyone that sells multiple cars hide the fact that they have other cars for sale? Most of the ads of cars for sale are too good to be true and I stay away from them but what do they hide by showing they are for sale by owner?
I have used Craig’s List to find a used car and some deals are too good to be true and I hate to see young folks buy these reconditioned cars that CARFAX can’t list because of the laws in 29 of the 50 states not making it mandatory to list wrecked or totaled cars.
Because "curbstoners" as they are called want to avoid paying taxes; avoid paying for a license (required if you sell over a certain number a year); avoid laws such as inspecting cars to make sure they are roadworthy; etc.
Most of the unbelievable deals on Craigslist are not from curbstoners but from con-artists. Most of these cars do not exist at all. They just convince unsuspecting buyers to send them cash through Western Union and of course they dissapear.
